Archives

Archival materials attract visitors interested in researching their family history, historic structures, and historic events.  One of the highlights of the archives is the original diary kept by Reuben Norton from 1841 through 1895.  Norton was a Rome shopkeeper who chronicled the movements of Confederate and Union troops and is referenced by many Civil War historians.  To better serve the public we are expanding the archives to include a reading room with internet access for research needs and appropriate archival storage to preserve the archival and three-dimensional collections.

Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board Grant

Under a grant from the Georgia Historical Records Advisory Board/Division of Archives and History, the museum has finally begun the long process of organizing and cataloguing the archival collection.  Russell McClanahan was hired as the archival intern in October of 2006.  During the past months, Russell has been working diligently to update the archives, create finding aids, complete a disaster prep plan and collections management policy.
